Phil Porter

"I think I am art, not the artist."

Iconic, Madison-based Outsider Artist Phil Porter died on January 3, 2022 at the age of 75. He lives on through the legacy he created through his art. He was, in the words of ArtWorking's Lance Owens, "a bright shining light." Phil Porter began working with Arts for All Wisconsin (then Very Special Arts Wisconsin) in 1985, winning multiple awards for his art in the years to come. His first award, Farmyard, earned first place at the annual Call for Art in 1995. He gained a steady following by exhibiting at AFA’s booth at Art Fair on the Square each summer and within a few years, art collectors begin queuing before the booth opened to buy paintings and talk to Phil.

Learn About Phil

"Regarding my philosophy of my work, it's important to paint about things you understand, and that you paint what you like. My inspiration for my paintings of cityscapes comes from travels, local field trips and life in Madison. I originally felt like I was an outcast to society. Now I feel like I'm part of society and make contributions like others, selling my art. I feel like my art is part of me and lets people know more about me."
